Retail Revolution Coming to Staten Island
Shoppers rejoice! Staten Island has several major retail projects in the works, including one located right here in the heart of St. George. These six new retail centers seek to meet and surpass the needs of Staten Island residents.
No More Tolls
For years, many Staten Islanders made the trek across the water to New Jersey to shop because of lower taxes. However, as toll rates and traffic have increased, many have started to find the drive to be too inconvenient and are looking for retail options closer to home. Developers and retailers have noticed, and now, are answering the needs of customers, marking a turning point for the island.
Retail Projects across Staten Island
The 6 large-scale projects across the island include:
- Empire Outlets in St. George–340,000 square foot addition to the transforming St. George Waterfront.
- Staten Island Mall expansion in New Springville–An expansion of 427,000 square feet is expected to be completed in 2017, with new additions such as a movie theatre, new shops and restaurants, and both interior and exterior improvements.
- The Boulevard in New Dorp–By 2018, shoppers can look forward to a multi-level shopping center with 60 stores and restaurants.
- Bricktown Centre in Charleston (Phase II)–By this holiday season, shoppers can expect to start making purchases in the newest addition of Bricktown Centre. A branch of the Public Library is also part of this addition.
- Riverside Galleria in Charleston–With a large outdoor promenade, shoppers will find themselves with great outdoor, waterfront dining options. Along with this, numerous stores and a large cinema are in the works, with a completion date of 2017.
- LNG Tank Site in Rossville–While the design is still in progress, South shore residents can start looking forward to a completely re-done site, with a mix of retail and outlet stores, restaurants, and a 16-plex movie theatre.
Empire Outlets
For St. George residents, the transformation of the waterfront by the St. George Redevelopment Project has been exciting to watch. The addition of new waterfront amenities, including the construction of the largest observation wheel in the Western Hemisphere, will attract many to the St. George Waterfront.
With these additions, comes Empire Outlets, a 340,000-square-foot retail complex. The center will offer 100 designer outlet retailers, the largest concentration of discount shops in NYC. So far, these shops include anchor Nordstrom Rack, as well as, H&M, Gap Outlet, Banana Republic Factory. Among these stores, Empire Outlets will offer customers numerous food and beverage options such as Haagen Dazs, Nathan’s Famous, Krispy Kreme, and Applebees. 40,000-square-feet of the complex will be a food and beverage deck, with great views of the New York City skyline.
